Brighton Festival

SoundCity is very pleased to be working closely our partners at the Brighton Festival to create unique performance opportunities for young musicians in the city.

Beginning with the Children’s Parade on 7 May the BHMA Brass Ensemble will lead the procession this year with a collection of Ska tunes before Brighton & Hove Youth Concert Band and Big Band take to the Fringe City Stage on New Road between 1-2pm. As part of ‘Pitch Perfect’ SoundCity will also be hosting three smaller stages (or ‘pitches’) around the Royal Pavilion Estate between 2-4pm with performances of acoustic pop and folk music in the Brighton Dome café-bar and chamber music in the Brighton Museum and Royal Pavilion music room.

On 15 May award winning cellist Laura van der Heijden will perform with Brighton Youth Orchestra at All Saints Church, in an exciting programme that includes music by Gabrieli, Copland and Rutter. The South Downs Percussion Ensemble will also join BYO percussion players for a performance of Varèse’s Ionisation.

In another ‘first’ for this year’s Festival, young flute-players from BHMA will perform their own Indian-inspired composition as part of the Dr Blighty installation in the Royal Pavilion Garden. This major new work will take place during the final week of the Festival, with our young flautists performing between 2-5pm on Friday 27 May.

This year the Festival theme is ‘50 Years on the Edge’ which not only references the 50 years since the Brighton Festival began but also looks to the city’s creative future – which we hope many of our young musicians will be a part of!
