Brighton Festival 2017 - Programme announced

The full programme for Brighton Festival 2017 - the largest annual curated multi-arts festival in England - has been unveiled with the acclaimed recording artist, poet, playwright and novelist Kate Tempest as Guest Director.

Many of Tempest’s interests, passions, and inspirations are explored in an eclectic line-up spanning theatre, dance, visual art, film, debate and spoken word and we are delighted to be involved with three events programmed to take part over the first two weekends of the festival, that wholly encompass Tempest’s belief that: “The arts should be in our communities, not only on elevated platforms or behind red velvet ropes”

The first event on Saturday 6 May (10.30am, Kensington Street) is the Children’s Parade - a famous and much-loved annual procession round the streets of Brighton, this year involving 5000 participants from more than 80 of our schools. Everyone can come along and enjoy colourful costumes, joyful music and a rapturous festive atmosphere all created by our jubilant youngsters interpreting the 2017 theme of Poetry in Motion in their own inventive ways. This year the Parade will be led by the Hot 8 Brass Band who will be bringing some New Orleans style to Brighton’s streets! The parade will also include our BHMA Brass Ensemble led by Sarah Leeves who will be continuing the New Orleans style to add to the party atmosphere.

Next up is Pitch Perfect, also on Saturday 6 May (12-4pm, New Road, Brighton Dome Café-bar and Brighton Museum Art Gallery) is a trail around the city’s cultural quarter. Come and hear Brighton’s brightest and best young talent in this annual feast of music from the next generation. From folk to rock, chamber ensembles to big band, Brighton’s youngest talent will be serving up musical morsels for every taste across Brighton's Royal Pavilion Estate.

And finally on Sunday 14 May (5pm, All Saints Church, Hove) Brighton Youth Orchestra in collaboration with Glyndebourne, present Music from around the world featuring Wai Sing Fat on dizi (bamboo flute) and a throng of young voices from secondary schools across the City of Brighton & Hove, led by Travis Baker and Lee Reynolds. This is sure to be an extravaganza of international music, providing the perfect end to the Festival’s second week and embracing Tempest’s ambition to “bring us together into the same space..and..bring us to life”. This event is suitable for all the family.
