So you’ve made a record. Now what?
Brighton-based label and industry veterans Tru Thoughts (Bonobo, Alice Russell, Hot 8 Brass Band) talk us through the next steps for a song after it’s been recorded in the studio. How do you get a song played on the radio, used in TV programmes and movies, or used as part of a major ad campaign?
In the first SPECTRUM seminar of the season, Tru Thoughts founders Paul Jonas and Robert Luis lead a discussion with the rest of their team about the work that goes into promoting recorded music, and how this can be translated for self-releasing artists.

Celebrate Dog In The Snow’s LP launch as part of SPECTRUM.
Dog In The Snow is the moniker of Brighton-based Helen Ganya Brown who experiments with existential-driven lyrics and layers of off-kilter sounds to create a peripatetic musical landscape.
Dog In The Snow finds its' inspiration in the juxtapositions: the warm project title goes hand-in-hand with the grim Kafka ending of 'The Trial'. Inspired by the dark underbelly of Scott Walker, the mortal anxieties of Sufjan Stevens, the glistening soundscapes of Susumu Yokota, Helen also finds influence from her own personal anxieties of being mixed race and a foreigner to her homelands, whilst exploring self-identity in its culture and ideas. Helen has supported the likes of Real Estate, D.D Dumbo, Barry Adamson (Bad Seeds / Magazine) and also plays with Fear Of Men.
Knightstown is the solo vocal/electronic project of composer and songwriter Michael Aston. Having worked for several years as a freelance composer/songwriter and performer, Aston’s extensive experience ranges from composing an Orchestral Overture for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games to playing keyboards for C Duncan.
Following the completion of the Knightstown LP, Aston has worked with composer and producer Matthew Hodson to reshape the studio album tracks into an intense, dynamic live performance set. Knightstown will release his self-titled debut album on FatCat Records in early-2018.
TEEFF sounds like an unexpected, overwhelming affinity with a total stranger in the dim light of an ending party; intimate, uninhibited and enigmatic. Ooozing with honesty, TEEFF combines wavy soundscapes with swaying beats in a contemporary resurrection of 00s RnB. She is a vocalist, songwriter and producer who extends her creativity into all aspects of the project to create symbiotic sonic and visual harmony.

Animal House
Animal House are here to kick a bored, robotic generation up off their arses and dancing to guitar music again. With accolades and experience coming out of their ears, there is little doubt that they are poised to become one of indie music’s leading guitar bands. Nonsense, cheekiness and foolish yet on-point observational humour are quickly becoming their trademarks as well as their tight, rebranded 60s garage pop sound.
Fresh off the back of a hugely successful European tour and having also previously supported Courtney Barnett, The Wedding Present, The Preatures, Surfer Blood and Drenge to name a few, Animal House are ready to go.

Brighton three-piece crafting slacker pop songs which celebrate the horrible feeling in the pit of your stomach; Sulky Boy is the amalgamation of graduate anxieties, positive thinking and a penchant for finding the danceable in the downtrodden.

Porridge Radio
Porridge Radio are a Brighton 5 piece who make and play 'a perfect blend between cool lo-fi rock and strange, morbid sadcore' (Wake The Deaf). In 2016 they released their first full band LP on cassette through Memorials of Distinction records, re-released in early 2017 on vinyl.
Inelegantly knotting together beautiful melodic pop songs with vicious and furious emotional outpour, their chaotic live shows have gained them a strong following within Brighton.

SPECTRUM: Winter Special,

Join us for a SPECTRUM winter special in the surrounds of the iconic Brighton Museum. Throughout the evening listen to unplugged performances within the exhibition rooms, before joining in on a sing-a-long in the main hall.
Emma Gatrill is a multi-instrumentalist based in Brighton, UK. Her debut, 2012’s Chapter I, was a poignant collection of songs based around her then-latest acquisition – the harp. Subtly accompanied by various members of Brighton’s Willkommen Collective, her intricate harp playing coupled with a unique vocal fragility drew comparisons to Björk and Joni Mitchell as well as her friends and co-conspirators Rachael Dadd and Rozi Plain. Five years and hundreds of live shows with dozens of different bands later including playing clarinet for Laura Marling's Glastonbury Pyramid set, her larger-scale live ambitions fed back into the writing and recording process for Gatrill’s forthcoming second album, Cocoon, described as 'a beautiful slab of skewed folk-pop brilliance' (Line of Best Fit).
Much revered for her haunting vocals and poignant lyrics, Sharon Lewis (formerly of the female duo Pooka) performs songs from her recent album Roses At The Top. Accompanying herself on piano, guitar and ukulele, Sharon’s spellbinding music has been described as strong medicine for the soul with songs that resonate as deeply as ancient hymns.
'What I love about Sharon’s songs is that they are such a unique expression of her’s, but they are really every person’s songs, what I mean is that anyone can place themselves inside them. I am a big fan!' Anais Mitchell
M. Butterfly is the alias of Martyn Lewis, a country singer from Brighton. His songs are intimate and simple with intensely personal lyrics, singing about depression, death, love and sexuality.
