Pathways into Music

A seminar for people who teach, advise and support early-career artists and future music industry talent, as well as the artists themselves. Surrey; Fri 26 Apr, 6.00pm - 8.00pm at Surrey Arts, 14 The Pines, Broad Street, Guildford, Surrey, GU3 3BH OR Brighton; Mon 29 Apr, 4.30pm - 6.30pm at The Basement, 24 Kensington Street, Brighton, BN1 4AJ Pathways into Music is the first in a series of seminars outlining how musicians can build a business and a career around their music. It explains how artists need to kickstart their own businesses and careers, introduces the people and companies they will work with along the way, and explores the challenges to be met and opportunities to be realised in both the global and the local music community. The course is aimed at those teaching, advising and supporting early-career musicians and future music industry talent, as well as anyone who is at the start of their own music career, on stage or behind the scenes. The seminar will be facilitated by Chris Cooke and Phil Nelson. Chris Cooke I’m an editor, journalist and media entrepreneur. I write and talk a lot about music and music business stuff, media stuff, culture and comedy stuff, copyright and legal stuff, and PR and branding stuff. I publish CMU, ThisWeek London and ThreeWeeks Edinburgh. I founded and co-own 3CM UnLimited, a group of companies that includes publisher UnLimited Media, education business UnLimited Learning, and music and media consultancy UnLimited Insights, which operates CMU Insights, Media Insights and Pathways Into Music. I work on The Great Escape and with the Taylor Bennett Foundation. I have dissected the digital music dollar. I have a free speech about free speech. I keep busy. Phil Nelson – Artist manager, lecturer, researcher I have been an Artist Manager since 1988 managing The Levellers (1 Platinum, 5 Gold records) who headlined Glastonbury before starting their own 15,000 capacity Festival Beautiful Days (which I set up), and The Longpigs (1 Gold record and Brit Award Nomination). Current clients include 2019 Grammy-nominated Matt Hales / Aqualung (1 Gold record) and Duke Special (1 Platinum record), Sweet Billy Pilgrim (1 Mercury music prize Nomination). I was the Vice Chair of the Music Managers’ Forum from 1997-2007. I co-founded The Great Escape Festival and now run the Education conference at TGE with Chris Cooke. From 2016-18 I was Music Industry Ambassador for BIMM Group of colleges, where I still lecture.
