BYO Memorial Concert For Jenny Caws
The BYO concert scheduled on 13 February 2015, at St Paul’s Church, West Street, will be dedicated to Jenny, the much loved and much missed inspirational musician and Oboe teacher who worked for over twenty years with the double reed and wind players at Brighton & Hove Music & Arts and BYO.
Before moving to Sussex in the early 1990’s Jenny held a number of principal seats in top orchestras (D’Oyly Carte Opera Company, the London Festival Ballet, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Orchestra). She was a regular Guest Principal Oboe with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Mozart Players and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. She performed as concerto soloist with many of the leading orchestras and conductors, and also performed in several live radio broadcasts.
She was appointed as Professor of Oboe to the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and the Welsh College of Music; at both she was responsible for the wind chamber music programmes. She taught oboe at the Royal College of Music and at the RCM Junior Department. She was a leading member of the British Double-Reed Society and her former pupils are among the leading performers and teachers in the UK.
Aside from Jenny’s extensive list of musical achievements she was a thoroughly lovely person who tirelessly supported her pupils and colleagues. We hope this concert will be a fitting tribute to a teacher, colleague and friend who will be much missed but whose musical legacy will continue to inspire and whose warmth and strength of character will not be forgotten.
