SoundCity 2

SoundCity 2 showcased the best of Brighton & Hove's musical youth talent on Saturday evening at the Corn Exchange in Brighton.  An audience of over 400 children, young people and adults enjoyed a diverse range of musical acts featuring school children, bands, soloists and ensembles.

Thanks to everyone that came along on Saturday 14 March, what a fantastic celebration of talented young musicians from Brighton & Hove!  We received many generous donations and are please to share our livestream of the event!

 

Audio Active - PLAY

 

An electronic, live hip-hop collaboration, PLAY aims to bridge the gap between bands and digitally produced music. Made up of bands and producers from AudioActivea registered charity based in Brighton working to challenge disadvantage and enhance the development of children and young people by providing high quality creative and musical experiences throughout the South East. 

 

Brighton and Hove Youth Big Band

 

The Brighton & Hove Youth Big Band is made up of 20 students from several Brighton and Hove schools and colleges. The band performs some of the most exciting repertoire written in soul, jazz and funk. 
 
Not only will BHYBB perform music by Goodwin on March 12, but also an impressive, collaborative finale piece with many other acts is on the lineup!
 

Boys Singing Project

 

Boys Singing Project is a new collaboration between secondary schools Cardinal Newman Catholic School, Longhill High School and Blatchington Mill specially developed for SoundCity 4.
All three schools have been working with vocalist Kushal Gaya to excel their vocal skills and to produce an outstanding piece! 

Brighton & Hove Youth Percussion Ensemble and Unified Rhythm

 

BHYPE and Unified Rhythm will be joining forces to perform a collaborative piece they have produced and specially written for this SoundCity 4.

 

BHYPE consists of approximately 10 players from

Brighton and Hove Music and Arts and performs a wide range of musical styles featuring pitched, unpitched, body and junk percussion instruments.

 

Unified Rhythm - RedZebra's dynamic and integrated carnival arts project -  will be returning from their high energy opening act at SoundCity 3!

Brighton Youth Orchestra String Ensemble

 

BYOSE are an award-winning ensemble from Brighton & Hove Music & Arts, made up of players from Brighton Youth Orchestra aged 14-19 that have been drawn in from a range of schools across Brighton. 

 

March 12 will see BYOSE perform beautifully, and all from memory, music by John Taverner.

 

 

Drive Up Jazz & Funk Band

 

Cardinal Newman's dynamic jazz and funk band returns, bringing with them an almighty collaboration to make an amazing combined sound.

 

This year, Drive Up Jazz & Funk Band will be taking part  in the impressive musical finale with BHY Big Band.

KERWIRE

 

KERWIRE are a very dedicated group of young singers from Dorothy Stringer who perform pop repertoire with a twist!

Luca Hallam

 

Luca has been learning flute with Brighton and Hove Music and Arts and is the principle flautist in Brighton Youth Orchestera. On March 12, Luca will be performing solo with a modern classic from

solo flute repertoire, Danse de la Chevre by Honegger.

o360

 

Orchestra 360 is a new inclusive ensemble for children and young people with special needs and disabilities and their siblings, parents and carers. 

 

o360 is led by James Redwood and joined by music leaders and senior students from BHMA. 

This group includes students from Downs Park, Down View School & Link College and

Hillside Special School. 

 

Oscar Arnell

 

Based in Brighton, Oscar released 2 Eps as a young teenager, both of which achieved critical acclaim. Since then he's worked out of Metway Studios to produce his first album which he's currently performing across the UK. Winner of the 2015 Elderflower Fields Festival choice award and with an ever growing fan base Oscar's now getting label interest and currently looking for the right deal. www.oscararnell.co.uk

 

Sax Quartet

 

The Sax Quartet are made up of advanced wind players aged 14 - 18 coming from Cardinal Newman Catholic School, BHASVIC and Blatchington Mill School. This is the latest BHMA ensemble and was created specifically for SoundCity 4. The Sax Quartet plan to meet throughout

the year to work towards specific performances. 

 

March 12 will see the quartet perform Sax in the City by Colin Crab - a piece orginally written to illustrate the salsa genre. 

 

 

Shannon Dixon

 

At just 16 Shannon is a rising Brighton talent; a passionate and uplifting vocalist with a love of pop! March 12 will see Shannon performing a song very close to her heart.

String Quartet

 

String quartet of students aged 14 - 18 from Brighton and Hove Music and Arts.

Ukulele Choir

 

A student led ukulele group from Hove Park School. Returning to SoundCity for a second year, the Ukulele Choir will be bringing a twist to old and classic pop and rock in an 80's mashup.

 

This year, Ukulele Choir have been joined by

music conductor, banjo and saxophonist, Alex

Bondonno to build on their already brilliant reportoire.

SoundCity 4 - A big thank you!

A big, big thank you to everyone who came to support Brighton and Hove's annual celebration of young musical talent SoundCity4! The night brilliantly showcased the incedible diverse and inclusive music making that is happening amongst young people across the city. All acts performed amazingly and made it a fantasitc and memorable night!
