Giving Talent a Chance! AYM tell us more
25 pupils from Brighton & Hove have been nominated to receive 2 years of tuition and support as part of Awards for Young Musicians Furthering Talent programme.
Saturday 28 June saw the official launch of the Furthering Talent programme, a partnership between Awards for Young Musicians and Brighton & Hove Music & Arts. As well as meeting each other and finding out more about the programme, these aspiring young musicians were treated to classical performances plus a band of young funk musicians (who’ve been learning with Brighton & Hove Music & Arts for years) that had both children and parents dancing!

The Furthering Talent students are taking their very first steps on their musical journeys and seeing them interact with young people who are further along that journey, but who they can still relate to, is really motivating for them.” Hester Cockcroft, AYM Director
So where did their journey begin? At the start of 2014 instrumental and primary school music teachers were asked to nominate pupils who they could see had a real spark for music within classroom lessons but who weren’t able to continue musical tuition due to financial constraints. The process identified 25 pupils to be part of this year’s programme. They include pupils from across the whole city on a variety of instruments.
“It’s very liberating to be able to spot talent and know we can help that young person find new channels to explore their musical ability. We’ve uncovered young people with real potential and most of the pupils have now started their instrumental lessons. They have a great opportunity now and I can’t wait to see where Furthering Talent takes them!” Natasha Bautista, AYM’s Furthering Talent Co--ordinator
Transformative, confidence building and committed are words the parents use time and again when they talk about the programme. Seeing their child noticed and supported this way is invaluable to many parents, particularly if they themselves are not from musical backgrounds. It was evident at the launch that everyone was celebrating this unique opportunity.
So what now? Furthering Talent sticks around! The students will be supported with at least two years of tuition funded by AYM as well as a broader support for their musical progression too. And it’s robust. Those on the programme must sign a programme agreement and commit to working hard. Their progress is monitored and if they continue to do well they’re given the option to stay on the programme.
