SAVE THE DATE – Thursday 16 July 2015
BREAKING THE BUBBLE: SEN/D MUSIC DEVELOPMENT DAY - Exploring approaches to inclusive music making for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, with keynote speaker one-handed pianist Nicholas McCarthy
As part of the Breaking the Bubble programme across Soundcity – Brighton and Hove, Soundhub – Kent, and Surrey Music Hub, a special event is being held in July to investigate group music making and children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.
The SEN/D MUSIC DEVELOPMENT DAY will be a one-day event and will take place on Thursday 16 July 2015, at Rich Mix in London. We invite schools, teachers, practitioners and managers involved with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities or music ensembles to ‘Save The Date’ in their diaries.
The keynote speaker for the SEN/D Music Development Day will be twenty five year old, one-handed pianist Nicholas McCarthy. McCarthy was born in 1989 without his right hand and only began to play the piano at the late age of 14 after seeing a friend play Beethoven’s Waldstein Sonata. Studying at the prestigious Royal College of Music in London, his graduation in July 2012 made history and drew press headlines world wide, being the only left-hand alone pianist to graduate from the Royal College of Music in its 130-year history. One of Nicholas’s proudest moments was performing with the British Paraorchestra at the Closing Ceremony of the 2012 Paralympic games. Speaking engagements have seen Nicholas speak across the country in a range of Schools and businesses including the annual ITV ‘Big Think’ Conference and most notably his TED Talk at The Royal Albert Hall.
The focus of the SEN/D Music Development Day will be group music making for children and young people with SEN/D. It will be a thought-provoking day to investigate what key issues face children and young people: delegates will be led through a day of mutual discoveries and exploration.
Young musicians and project managers from the South East and beyond will be performing and presenting at the event.
Further details about the event (including booking, timings) will be available in due course. Meanwhile, enquiries can be made by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org
