Brighton & Hove: “A Singing City”
Over 100 music educators and practitioners recently came together to share practice and network with colleagues from across the city. There was a wide range of practical workshops including:
-
Songs of Hope and Deliverance - Celia Wickham-Anderson
This workshop looked at the role of the spirituals in the slaves' struggle for freedom and the hidden messages behind some of them while giving participants an opportunity to sing some exciting arrangements of familiar songs.
-
Music and Behaviour – Darren Abrahams
How music can be used to regulate the nervous system with examples from projects and research from around the world.
-
Superheroes – James Redwood
This workshop launched a new singing project for KS2/3 linked to the Rugby World Cup 2015 which explored the project themes and song-writing.
-
Vocal Looping & Harmony – Cate Ferris & Marina Perryman, AudioActive
This was an introduction to vocal harmony, looping and improvisation from the technical through to the physical and gave tips on how to break through the "shyness" barrier.
-
Rhyme Control - Jon Clark, AudioActive
An interactive and practical introduction on how to deliver a workshop on lyric writing, making vowel structures work for you, and how to mine the rich seam of ideas in the seemingly mundane.
-
Vocal Music in the Classroom - Lee Reynolds, Glyndebourne
Presenting techniques and ideas to help teachers use their voices and to encourage children and young people to discover theirs. Lee also looked at building confidence in singing, how to lead, making singing engaging for different ages and abilities and using singing to make music the dominant language of learning. This session also included simple pieces suitable for those who don’t necessarily read notation.
