World Cup inspired vuvuzelas and diabolicas filled the Music Centre during Summer School!

The sound of music filled the studios and corridors of the Music Centre as over 450 young people took part in vocal and instrumental courses, forming bands and ensembles and learning new music in a range of styles.

Every course ended in a performance giving some fantastic concerts featuring a wide diversity of music – ranging from Renaissance dances performed by our young string players to a piece for wind band composed by one of our teachers, that was based on football chants and inspired by the World Cup featured vuvuzelas and diabolicas!

Children from years 2 to year 9 attended 20 courses from 30 June up until 25 July.  This year the Summer School programme has included opportunities to take part in musical theatre; keyboard, drum kit and guitar courses; music technology and animation; vocal and instrumental ensembles for strings, wind and percussion players.

‘I’ve really enjoyed learning to play songs that I could already sing, but didn’t know how to play,’ said Amelie, age 9 who attended the Keyboard Studio course. ‘My favourite piece was Don’t Stop Believing’.

‘The teacher made it really easy and fun by helping us to learn each part,’ said Zoe, age 9. ‘Doing music in two parts makes it sound so much better and it was fun being in a big band of keyboards!’

We would love to hear from children who took part (and their parents/carers).  Everyone who attended will be invited to complete an online questionnaire about their experience. We are already planning for Summer School 2015, but if you want to continue music-making in the meantime, why not join one of our Music Centre groups
