Partners/Educators: Songs to Share
SoundCity partners have been taking part in Songs to Share a practical and innovative approach to training that brings the joy of singing to music leaders across the city.
In partnership with Glyndebourne, http://glyndebourne.com SoundCity has offered a series of four TeachMeet- style professional development sessions for colleagues who use singing in their work with children and young people, in various settings across the city. Led by Howard Moody, the sessions have included an exploration of different ways to enhance vocal creativity, develop vocal skills and approach song-writing. The group have even composed a number of original songs which they hope to share more widely across SoundCity partner organisations and schools.
A diverse range of practitioners have taken part, including primary and secondary music teachers, music therapists, choir leaders, social workers and instrumental teachers – leading to the development of new relationships across the sector and establishment of a valuable forum where colleagues can share, learn and develop vocal confidence and leadership skills.
Chris Stones, Senior Education Projects manager from Glyndebourne said, ‘This exciting pilot project has brought together a really broad cross-section of inspiring professionals who use music in their work with young people in Brighton & Hove. It has been great to see such a diverse group come together over the four sessions to share practice, share their creativity and share songs with each other in a spirit of openness and community.’
Songs to Share participant Anna Rusbatch, Music Coordinator at Downs Junior School said, ‘I've particularly enjoyed meeting and improvising with a wide variety of creative professionals. I feel I have greatly developed professionally, in terms of song-writing methods and vocal performance and I've been able to apply these experiences to my work in school and also personally, with my own compositions.’
The first phase of Songs to Share draws to a close in November but the group are keen to continue to meet, to share songs and effective practice. If you are interested in joining the group or would like further information please contact Holly Griffiths holly.griffiths@brighton-hove.gov.uk

4 classes from Year 7 have been taking part in a brass pilot project, supported by the school and the Head Teacher, using ptrumpets and pbones (plastic).
Ray Chi-Hang Long will join BYO when they perform on Saturday 28 November at St John's Church, Knoyle Road at 7pm.
The BYO concert scheduled on 13 Feb 2015 at St Paul's Church, West Street, will be dedicated to Jenny Caws, much loved and much missed inspirational teacher.
Also performing at the Brighton Centre on 8 Dec will be BHMA percussion ensemble along with pupils from 5 primary schools.
