Developing Youth Voice for Young Musicians in Brighton & Hove

 

Aged 14-25 and would like to help develop a youth voice for young musicians in Brighton & Hove?

                       

Music is a platform that can create opportunities and career paths for young people, but how do we stay up to date with what attracts and inspires the future generation of Brighton & Hove? Working with Sound Connections and Wired4Music, who are London based music organisations, SoundCity and Rhythmix are assembling a collective of young people who will meet regularly to discuss ideas, projects and opportunities that they would like to create together.

                                     

On 3 June, 12 young people from Brighton & Hove met at Brighton Youth Centre to listen to each others’ musical journeys and openly talk about what they have enjoyed most from their past musical experiences – thinking about their ‘light bulb’ moments and opportunities they wish there could have been more of. The young people ranged from Rap/MC’s, singers and orchestral players to contemporary musicians.

 

Highlights of the discussions included available spaces for practicing and gigs in Brighton & Hove and setting up a forum for young people to explore and develop the skills needed for networking and innovative musical collaborations.

               
With the project now off the ground and having heard a group of young creative minds discussing their interests, it seemed everyone was able to take something away from the session. Jessica Loveless from Sound Connections said “It was great to hear the ideas of so many engaged and passionate young musicians, and from their feedback they seemed to get a lot out of the session too. “
