BREAKING THE BUBBLE: SEN/D MUSIC DEVELOPMENT DAY 

 

Exploring approaches to inclusive music-making for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) with keynote speaker from the one-handed pianist Nicholas McCarthy

As part of a partner project taking place across the South East of England, with SoundCity – Brighton and Hove, Soundhub – Kent, and Surrey Music Hub called Breaking the Bubble, Surrey Arts are producing a special event in July 2015 to investigate group music-making for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.

 

The SEN/D Music Development Day is a one-day event and will take place on Thursday 16th July 2015, at RichMix in London. The day will be facilitated by Marc Jaffrey OBE with a Keynote Speech from the one-handed pianist Nicholas McCarthy.

 

The SEN/D Music Development Day aims to encourage a dialogue around the big issues that the music education sector faces in making music accessible and inspirational for young people with special educational needs and disability. It will also act as a call to action for the sector to provide more, higher quality, accessible, inclusive and creative opportunities for children and young people with SEN/D. The event will see presentations by Brighton & Hove Music & Arts, Orchestra ONE (Kent Music) and OpenUp Music, followed by delegate discussions. Delegates will also hear a performance by Surrey Music Hub’s UP! Orchestra (the Orchestra of Unlimited Potential – an exceptional group in Surrey for young musicians with SEN/D) who will play with young musicians visiting from CCOMPAZ youth music, an inspirational organisation from Mexico. The day is being organised in partnership with Sound Connections. 

 

The event aims to provide an opportunity to explore how existing and new music ensembles or group activities can be made accessible for children and young people with special educational needs and disability. It will be a forum for sharing good practice, practical solutions and stimulate thinking for delegates to consider using a range of musical activities, ensembles and environments with their local music communities.
